Of course you don’t want to invite just anyone into your home, especially with a precious new family member. You need to know that they are honest, trustworthy and not going to interfere in the delicate balance of family life. And you need to know that they will always have the care of your family as their highest priority.
All the NMSS providers have completed a comprehensive NMSS Training Course. They have a current first aid and CPR certificate. They have been approved by the relevant state body to be suitable for working with children. They are fully covered by insurance. They are very experienced in caring for families with young children, either by bringing up their own children, and/or working in maternity or early childhood settings.
Our providers are committed to the NMSS Code of Ethics. This states that they will:
- Respect and follow the routines for feeding, settling and sleeping established by the parents of the baby to ensure consistency.
- Provide positive and non-judgemental support to parents (family-centred practice).
- Encourage parents to trust their own instincts.
- Maintain absolute client confidentiality.
- Provide suggestions and information only when requested by parents.
When you are choosing a NMSS provider, arrange for them to come to your home for an initial visit. You can then have a chat with them and see how they fit in with your family. You should ask yourself:
- Does this person seem friendly and happy?
- Does she really listen to what I am saying?
- Can she relate to what I am going through?
- Does she have experience with babies and will she be able to offer suggestions if I need help?
- Is she trustworthy and reliable?
Ask about their experience with young children, and for referees. You should also check when they are available to help you and what fees they charge.
Then you will know that you are choosing the perfect helper for your family!
